severe hypothyroidism causing skin and tissue swelling
Myxedema is a severe form of hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This condition can lead to symptoms such as extreme fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and swelling of the skin and tissues, particularly noticeable in the face and lower legs. In extreme cases, it can progress to myxedema coma, a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical attention.
