Piedra is a fungal infection of the hair shaft, characterized by the presence of hard nodules on the hair. There are two types: black piedra, caused by the fungus Piedraia hortae, and white piedra, caused by fungi in the Trichosporon genus. These nodules can cause hair to become brittle and break off.
