research Current and Emerging Approaches to Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia, the most common hair loss disorder, involves follicle miniaturization due to genetic and androgen interactions, particularly dihydrotestosterone. While not life-threatening, it can significantly impact quality of life. Early diagnosis is crucial for slowing progression and personalizing treatment. Established treatments include topical minoxidil and oral 5a-reductase inhibitors like finasteride. Other options, such as topical finasteride, low-level laser therapy, and hair transplantation, depend on severity and availability. Emerging treatments like low-dose oral minoxidil, platelet-rich plasma, and microneedling show promise, but require more evidence for long-term efficacy and safety.
