This case report describes a 61-year-old male with long-standing alopecia areata (AA) who experienced significant improvement and complete resolution of hair loss after nine months of acupuncture therapy, consisting of 55 sessions. The treatment involved plum-blossom needle tapping, circumferential needling, and systemic body acupuncture, administered three times weekly. The patient's condition improved within two months, and the migratory pattern of hair loss diminished. This case suggests that acupuncture may be an effective non-pharmacological treatment for persistent AA, although further controlled studies with biomarker analysis are needed to understand the therapeutic mechanisms.
This case report highlights the successful treatment of a 61-year-old male with long-standing alopecia areata using acupuncture therapy. The patient, who had experienced patchy hair loss for over six years, underwent a comprehensive acupuncture protocol involving plum-blossom needle tapping, circumferential needling, and systemic body acupuncture, administered three times weekly. Significant improvement was noted within two months, and complete resolution was achieved after nine months (55 sessions). The study suggests acupuncture as a potential non-pharmacological treatment for alopecia areata, though further controlled studies with biomarker analysis are needed to understand the therapeutic mechanisms.
