TLDR Inappropriate continuation of certain medications after surgery can be risky, highlighting the need for better guidance and communication.
A retrospective audit at The Royal Derby Hospital assessed the continuation of tamsulosin and/or finasteride after TURP or Bipolep in 64 patients (mean age 74). Postoperatively, 28% of patients continued these medications without documented rationale, and some had them continued on repeat prescriptions despite instructions to stop. Documentation of medication changes was often absent or incomplete, with only six patients having consistent records in both TTOs and GP letters. The study concluded that inappropriate continuation of these medications poses risks such as polypharmacy and hypotension, and emphasized the need for standardized postoperative guidance, clearer discharge documentation, and improved communication with general practitioners to enhance patient safety.
