TLDR Using Excimer light with topical steroids is the most effective treatment for alopecia areata.
The study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of using 308 nm–Excimer light combined with topical betamethasone valerate for treating alopecia areata in 30 patients. The patients' patches were divided into three groups: one receiving only topical steroids, another only Excimer light, and the third both treatments. All groups showed significant improvement, but the combination therapy group exhibited the most substantial hair regrowth, with 60% of patches achieving over 50% regrowth. Additionally, the combination treatment significantly reduced black dots and exclamation mark hairs, indicating decreased disease activity. The study concluded that Excimer light is an effective and safe treatment for alopecia areata, particularly when used alongside topical steroids.
