TLDR Mini pulse corticosteroid therapy with oral dexamethasone is effective and has fewer side effects for treating extensive alopecia areata.
This multicentric study evaluated the effectiveness of mini pulse corticosteroid therapy with oral dexamethasone (MPCT-OD) in adult patients with extensive forms of alopecia areata (AA) who had not responded to previous treatments. The study involved patients with a SALT index of 10 or higher, who received 0.1 mg/kg/day of dexamethasone twice weekly for at least 24 weeks. The therapeutic response was measured by the percentage change in the SALT score and changes in eyebrow and eyelash alopecia indices from baseline to 24 weeks. The study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of MPCT-OD, considering factors such as dosage, treatment duration, time to response, relapse, adverse effects, and treatment discontinuation. The findings suggest that MPCT-OD could be an effective treatment option for extensive AA with a lower rate of adverse effects.
