TLDR Electrical stimulation with a low-calorie diet reduces appetite, weight, and blood pressure in obese people with sleep apnea.
A study presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Irish Endocrine Society investigated the chronic effects of transcutaneous neurostimulation (TENS) on weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and appetite-regulating hormones in obese subjects with moderate obstructive sleep apnea. The study found that electrical stimulation of the T6 dermatome, combined with hypocaloric diets, led to appetite and weight reduction, lower ghrelin levels, an acute drop in plasma glucose, and a reduction in systolic blood pressure compared to stimulation of the S1 dermatome.
