TLDR Alopecia areata in Dubai mostly affects men, often involves autoimmune disorders, and has high healthcare costs, especially for psychological issues.
This retrospective study of 11,851 alopecia areata (AA) patients in the UAE highlights the disease's significant clinical and economic burden, with 78.55% of patients experiencing comorbidities, particularly autoimmune and Th2-mediated immune disorders. The study found a male predominance in AA cases and noted high healthcare costs, especially for those with psychological disorders. Treatment patterns primarily involved topical corticosteroids, though newer JAK inhibitors show promise. The study emphasizes the need for targeted therapies and cost-effective treatment options, suggesting that innovative therapies targeting the autoimmune pathway could improve outcomes and reduce costs. However, the study's findings are limited by the lack of sociodemographic data and potential selection bias.
