Acute Telogen Effluvium Related to COVID-19 Infection: A Review

TLDR COVID-19 can cause temporary hair loss, especially in women, starting about two months after infection.
The review examined the relationship between COVID-19 infection and the onset of Telogen Effluvium (TE), a type of non-scarring hair loss. It was found that more than 50% of females experienced TE post-COVID, with an average onset of 63 days after infection. TE was primarily observed in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19, and Caucasians were more affected than other racial groups. Factors such as age, gender, COVID-19 severity, and pre-existing conditions like vitamin D deficiency, anemia, hypothyroidism, and type 2 diabetes mellitus influenced the occurrence of TE. The study synthesized findings from nine studies published between 2020 and 2021.
