Iron deficiency, often referred to as iron deficiency anemia, is a condition where the body lacks sufficient iron to produce adequate levels of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. This can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and shortness of breath. It is commonly caused by inadequate dietary intake, blood loss, or an inability to absorb iron properly.
