TLDR Ficus platyphylla leaf extract is likely safe in high doses, with minor temporary side effects.
The study evaluated the acute toxicity of Ficus platyphylla methanolic leaf extract in Wistar rats, focusing on its safety profile and phytochemical composition. The extract was administered in doses up to 5000 mg/kg, with no mortality observed, although transient signs of toxicity such as shivering, hair loss, and dizziness were noted at the highest dose. Phytochemical analysis identified several compounds, including alkaloids and flavonoids. No significant changes in body weight, organ weights, or liver enzyme activities were detected, suggesting low hepatotoxic potential. The oral LD₅₀ was estimated to exceed 5000 mg/kg, indicating a high margin of acute safety, supporting its traditional medicinal use. Further studies are recommended for comprehensive safety evaluation.
