TLDR Adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, rhodiola, and schisandra may help treat stress-related skin issues.
Adaptogenic herbal extracts such as ashwagandha, rhodiola, and schisandra show promise in treating stress-induced dermatoses, including eczema, psoriasis, and stress-related hair loss like telogen effluvium. These extracts work by modulating the HPA axis to regulate cortisol, which can exacerbate inflammatory skin conditions under chronic stress. Ashwagandha reduces cortisol and inflammation, rhodiola provides antioxidant benefits and stress resistance, and schisandra protects against oxidative stress. Adaptogens may improve skin barrier function and moisture retention in topical forms, while oral supplements can reduce systemic inflammation and normalize immune function. They also help balance neuroendocrine-immune interactions, affecting cytokine production and alleviating conditions like psoriasis, making them a promising addition to dermatological treatments for stress-related skin issues.
