TLDR Understanding cultural hair care practices is essential for improving hair health in the African American population.
The document highlighted the importance for dermatologists to understand cultural hair care practices that could lead to inflammation and scalp issues in the African American population. A systematic review of medical databases focused on the unique characteristics and hair care products for African American hair. It was found that understanding the anatomical and molecular traits of African-origin hair was crucial for selecting appropriate products. Practices like straightening and chemical treatments were identified as causes of hair breakage. While shampoo removes sebum and residues, its surfactant content could negatively affect curly hair. Modern care and cleaning techniques were developed to enhance the cosmetic feel of the hair. Clinical evaluation and cultural knowledge of hair routines were deemed essential tools for improving hair health and care in this demographic.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

In this conversation, 4990 discussed various treatments for hair loss, including oral minoxidil, PRP, transplan, Jak inhibitors, Dutasteride, Finasteride, Olumiant, Ketoconazole, RU58841, microneedling, baricitinib, and CCCA. They recommended scalp biopsies in unclear cases of DUPA, twice weekly to twice daily shampooing for topical minoxidil users, and two sessions spaced one month apart with follow up at month three to determine the effectiveness of PRP treatment.

Hair loss is linked to DHT, with treatments like finasteride and minoxidil being common but not definitive. Economic interests influence research, and there is potential for new treatments like PP405 and RU58841.

community Why do we get bald from evolutionary perspective

Baldness is not an evolutionary disadvantage because it occurs after reproductive age. Treatments like Minoxidil and Finasteride are used for androgenetic alopecia but don't address the root cause.
