Do Patients With Afro-Textured Hair Experiencing Hair Loss Feel Understood by Their Dermatologists? A Cross-Sectional Study

Emma Amoafo, Holly Baker, Victoria Akhras
TLDR Patients with afro-textured hair often feel misunderstood by dermatologists regarding hair loss.
This study examined the experiences of 17 patients with afro-textured hair experiencing hair loss and their interactions with dermatologists. It found that 59% of patients did not receive a diagnosis before consulting a dermatologist, and 71% did not fully understand the cause of their hair loss. Social media and personal networks were common sources of information. After seeing a dermatologist, 76% received a diagnosis, and 82% were offered a biopsy. However, only 29% felt their dermatologist understood their condition well. The study highlights a need for better education among dermatologists regarding afro-textured hair, as patients felt more understood by doctors with similar hair types. The British Association of Dermatologists' patient information leaflet was underutilized, with only 29% of patients being directed to it, though it was found helpful by 41% of those who used it. The study underscores the importance of improving dermatological care and resources for patients with afro-textured hair.
