TLDR Alopecia areata patients are more likely to have thyroid disorders than healthy individuals.
This study investigated the association between alopecia areata (AA) and thyroid disorders through a cross-sectional case-control study involving 40 AA patients and 40 healthy controls. The findings revealed that thyroid dysfunction was significantly more prevalent in AA patients (20%) compared to controls (5%), with AA patients having a 4.7 times higher risk of developing thyroid disorders. Significant differences were observed in the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free tri-iodothyronine (FT3), and free thyroxine (FT4) between the groups. Additionally, thyroid auto-antibodies (Tg-Ab and TPO-Ab) were significantly elevated in AA patients, even in those who were euthyroid. The study concludes that AA patients have a higher prevalence of thyroid disorders, with altered serum levels of thyroid-related hormones and antibodies compared to healthy individuals.
