Treatment of Alopecia Areata With JAK Inhibitors

Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune condition causing non-scarring hair loss, which can escalate to alopecia totalis or universalis. Traditional treatments like corticosteroids often provide limited and temporary relief, especially in severe cases. Recent studies have highlighted Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors as a promising treatment option by targeting cytokine pathways involved in AA. This review discusses the efficacy and safety of JAK inhibitors, with baricitinib and deuruxolitinib showing significant scalp hair regrowth and acceptable safety profiles. Common side effects include acne and elevated lipid levels, but long-term safety data is still lacking. The review emphasizes the need for further research to determine optimal dosing, treatment duration, and long-term safety of JAK inhibitors in managing AA.
