TLDR Clinicians should use evidence-based tools and consider mental health when assessing alopecia areata to guide treatment.
Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease causing nonscarring hair loss, and its severity can be assessed using tools like the Severity of Alopecia Tool, AA Scale, and AA Severity and Morbidity Index. These tools help determine treatment approaches and evaluate responses, considering factors beyond scalp hair loss, such as eyebrow and eyelash involvement. AA significantly impacts patients' quality of life, necessitating assessments of psychosocial effects using measures like the Dermatology Life Quality Index and Alopecia Areata Symptom Impact Scale. Clinicians should use evidence-based tools and consider mental health and wellbeing when assessing AA severity to guide treatment decisions.
