TLDR Adequate zinc and iron intake may reduce hair loss after bariatric surgery.
The study investigated the nutritional status of zinc, iron, copper, selenium, and protein-visceral in women with severe and morbid obesity who underwent bariatric surgery, focusing on the degree of hair loss 6 months post-surgery. It involved 87 women, divided into two groups based on hair loss severity: mild (42 women) and severe (45 women). Both groups experienced significant weight reduction. Women with mild hair loss had higher zinc and iron intake and better nutritional status for these minerals compared to those with severe hair loss. However, the latter group had a better nutritional status for copper. There were no differences in plasma albumin levels between the groups. The study concluded that higher intake and better nutritional status of zinc and iron were associated with less hair loss after surgery.
