TLDR Transgender patients on masculinizing hormones have higher hair loss rates than cisgender women.
The study investigated the incidence of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patients receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) compared to cisgender patients, using data from 37,826 patients at Fenway Health. Results showed that TGD patients on masculinizing GAHT had 2.5 times the rate of AGA compared to cisgender women, but no significant increase compared to cisgender men. TGD patients on feminizing GAHT did not show a significant difference in AGA rates compared to cisgender men, but had a significantly higher rate compared to cisgender women. The study's limitations include the inability to determine causation and limited generalizability.
