The Use of Anabolic Steroids by Bodybuilders in Sergipe, Brazil

    The study on anabolic steroid use among 71 bodybuilders in Sergipe, Brazil, found that 94.4% of participants have used anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs), primarily for muscle mass gain and fat burning. The majority were male (84.5%) and aged between 20-40 years. Commonly used substances included Sustanon 250, Nandrolone Decanoate, and Testosterone Enanthate. Acute side effects reported were acne (33.8%) and alopecia (23.7%), while chronic effects included hypertension (36%) and liver disease (28%). Despite the health risks, many athletes continue using steroids, often influenced by coaches and peers, with a significant portion lacking medical oversight. The study emphasizes the need for awareness campaigns to mitigate these health risks.
