TLDR Eclipta prostrata extracts show promise for treating skin conditions but may be toxic.
This study evaluates the antibacterial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic properties of Eclipta prostrata extracts, traditionally used in Asian medicine for skin diseases. The research focuses on optimizing extraction and fractionation methods to enhance efficacy. The extracts showed significant antibacterial activity against various bacteria, with fractionated compounds demonstrating increased efficacy. Antioxidant activity was also higher in fractionated compounds, with an IC50 of 0.174 mg/ml compared to 0.666 mg/ml for crude extracts. Total phenolic content was notably higher in fractionated compounds. However, the extracts exhibited high cytotoxicity, particularly in fractionated forms, necessitating further investigation. These findings suggest that E. prostrata extracts, especially fractionated compounds, have potential for use in pharmaceutical formulations for treating skin conditions, particularly in aging populations.
