TLDR Mothers with atopic dermatitis have higher risks of pregnancy complications and their children are more likely to develop certain health conditions.
This nationwide population-based study in Taiwan investigated the relationship between maternal atopic dermatitis (AD) and adverse pregnancy and offspring outcomes. The study included 15,495 mothers with AD and 77,475 without, along with their children. Results showed that mothers with AD had higher risks of various pregnancy complications, such as threatened abortion and preeclampsia, with adjusted hazard ratios ranging from 1.09 to 1.71. Additionally, children born to AD mothers were at increased risk for conditions like AD, allergic rhinitis, asthma, alopecia areata, and ADHD, with hazard ratios between 1.05 and 2.29. The study concludes a significant association between maternal AD and adverse outcomes for both pregnancy and offspring.
