A quasi-experimental study conducted at Fauji Foundation Hospital in Rawalpindi evaluated the efficacy and safety of azathioprine for treating alopecia areata (AA) in 37 patients. Participants received 2 mg/kg/day of azathioprine for 6 months, with follow-up for an additional 6 months. The study used the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score to measure hair regrowth, defining efficacy as a ≥50% improvement from baseline. Of the 31 patients who completed the study, 77.4% (24 patients) experienced significant hair regrowth, with the mean SALT score improving from 44.9±25.5 to 14.8±17.5. The study concluded that azathioprine was effective and safe for treating AA.
