TLDR Patients with alopecia areata face treatment barriers due to lack of reimbursement and need more support and information.
This study highlights significant barriers and disparities in the healthcare of patients with alopecia areata (AA) in Germany, primarily due to the lack of reimbursement for treatments, which are categorized as 'lifestyle' rather than medical necessities. The mixed-methods analysis, involving interviews with 20 patients and 14 dermatologists, alongside claims data from 4,692 individuals, reveals that while 57.5% of patients received drug prescriptions, access to systemic drugs was notably low. The study found that urban residents and women were more likely to receive treatment. Patients expressed a need for more information and support, with many feeling frustrated by the limited treatment options. Recommendations include ensuring reimbursement for AA medications and creating an informational platform for both patients and healthcare providers.
