TLDR Onion juice is most effective for hair regrowth, while garlic, ginger, and clove support scalp health.
This review explores the role of botanicals such as ginger, garlic, onion, and clove in managing alopecia. These plants contain bioactive compounds like gingerols, allicin, quercetin, and eugenol, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and circulation-enhancing properties. Onion juice has the strongest clinical evidence for promoting hair regrowth, particularly in cases of alopecia areata, while garlic shows promising preclinical regenerative effects. Ginger and clove mainly help reduce dandruff, inflammation, and scalp irritation. Although these botanicals cannot replace conventional medical treatments, they can be effective and safe complementary options for improving scalp health and supporting hair growth.
