TLDR Botulinum toxin type A effectively reduces pain in hair loss disorders.
This retrospective study evaluated the effectiveness of intradermal botulinum toxin type A (BTA) in 21 patients with trichodynia associated with alopecia, who were unresponsive to conventional treatments. The results showed that 90.5% of patients experienced symptomatic improvement within an average of 18.3 days, with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores decreasing from 8.0 to 2.0 at 3 months and reaching 0.0 by 6 months. Patients with cicatricial alopecia showed significant reductions in Lichen Planopilaris Activity Index (LPPAI) scores. The treatment was well tolerated with minor adverse effects. The study suggests that BTA may be particularly beneficial for patients with scarring alopecia due to its neuromodulatory effects on neurogenic inflammation. Further controlled studies are recommended to validate these findings.
