Refractory Trichodynia Treated Using Onabotulinumtoxin-A

This case report described a 25-year-old female with refractory trichodynia, a condition characterized by scalp pain and discomfort, potentially linked to hair loss. Traditional treatments, including pregabalin, amitriptyline, and propranolol, were ineffective. The patient was treated with off-label onabotulinumtoxin-A (BoNT-A) injections, which led to significant improvement and eventual resolution of symptoms after three treatment cycles over nine months. The study suggested that BoNT-A could modulate pain by inhibiting neuropeptide release, offering a potential new treatment for trichodynia, especially in cases unresponsive to conventional therapies. Further research was recommended to explore BoNT-A's efficacy in larger patient populations and its potential impact on hair loss associated with trichodynia.
