TLDR Candida nail infections need lab tests for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Onychomycosis, or tinea unguium, is a fungal infection of the nails caused by various fungi, including dermatophytes, non-dermatophytes, and yeasts, such as Candida. Candida onychomycosis affects all parts of the nail, leading to discoloration, thickening, softening, and brittleness. It is a common nail disorder, accounting for about 50% of nail-related complaints. Due to the diverse causes and potential differential diagnoses, laboratory tests like direct preparation, fungal culture, and molecular testing are recommended to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, optimizing both time and cost.
