TLDR CBD may help manage severe lung issues in COVID-19 patients.
This review explores the potential of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychotropic compound from Cannabis sativa, in managing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in COVID-19 patients. ARDS and mortality in COVID-19 are primarily caused by a cytokine storm, an excessive release of cytokines. Early management of this storm with immunomodulators is crucial for improving patient survival rates. While some immunosuppressants like corticosteroids and tocilizumab have been studied, their use requires caution. CBD's anti-inflammatory properties may offer a promising alternative for managing ARDS in COVID-19 patients.
