Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection can lead to various skin manifestations in 40-80% of cases, including erythematous eruptions and lesions. This study investigates the skin's immunohistopathological response during the acute phase of CHIKV infection. Key findings include perivascular and inflammatory infiltrates, blood capillary ectasia, and interstitial edema. CHIKV antigens were found in the epidermis, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and macrophages. Inflammatory infiltrates consisted of lymphocytes and macrophages, with cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6 expressed in various skin structures. The study enhances understanding of CHIKV skin immunopathogenesis, which remains under-researched.
