A Clinical Study of 50 Cases of Female Pattern Hair Loss

    Zhang Xing-qi
TLDR Genetics, low estrogen, and low iron levels contribute to female hair loss, with specific scalp signs indicating severity.
The study investigated 50 cases of female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and found that genetic factors and low estrogen levels were significant contributors to FPHL in young adults, while low serum ferritin levels were a potential trigger in older adults. The study also noted that hormonal changes could explain severe hair loss in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Dermoscopic features such as scalp pigmentation, focal atrichia, brown and white peripilar signs, and white dots were more prevalent in FPHL patients compared to healthy controls. The white peripilar sign was identified as an indicator of advanced FPHL and a marker of poor prognosis.

DHT is important for sexual function and mood, but finasteride and dutasteride can reduce DHT, causing side effects like reduced libido and erectile dysfunction. These treatments are effective for hair loss, but their impact on DHT leads to debate.
