TLDR A strict gluten-free diet can improve liver issues in celiac disease.
This case report describes a 40-year-old woman with celiac disease (CD) who presented atypically with constipation and liver involvement, marked by positive anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) and antinuclear antibodies (ANA), without signs of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) or primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). The report highlights the complexity of serological overlap in autoimmune conditions and stresses the importance of thorough clinical correlation in CD patients. The patient's liver abnormalities, termed celiac hepatitis (CH), improved with a strict gluten-free diet, demonstrating the potential for dietary management to reverse liver dysfunction in CD. This case underscores the need for awareness of atypical CD presentations and comprehensive diagnostic evaluations to prevent misdiagnosis and ensure appropriate treatment.
