Correlation of Cutaneous Manifestations With Hormonal Profile in Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
September 2019
TLDR Skin issues in women with PCOS are linked to hormone imbalances and can help diagnose the condition early.
This study evaluated the correlation between cutaneous manifestations and hormonal profiles in 100 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). It found that cutaneous manifestations such as hirsutism, acne, and androgenetic alopecia were prevalent and significantly associated with hyperandrogenism, while acanthosis nigricans was strongly linked to insulin resistance. Hirsutism was the most common manifestation, observed in 72% of participants, and showed a strong positive correlation with total and free testosterone levels. Acne severity was also associated with testosterone and DHEAS levels. The study concluded that dermatological evaluations could be crucial for identifying endocrine dysfunctions, aiding in the early diagnosis and management of PCOS.
