TLDR CRF can cause hair loss, but blocking its receptors might prevent this.
The study investigated the effects of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) on human dermal papilla cells (DPCs), which are crucial for hair growth and cycling. CRF, a hormone involved in stress response, was found to modulate the expression of hair growth-related cytokines (KGF, Wnt5a, TGFβ-2, Nexin) and increase cAMP production in DPCs. The study demonstrated that CRF operates through its receptors along the classical CRF signaling pathway, and the modulation could be prevented by CRF receptor antagonists or a protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor. These findings suggested that CRF receptor antagonists might serve as potential therapeutic and cosmetic agents for stress-induced hair loss.
