TLDR CYP11A1 is crucial for skin health and disease by producing important steroids.
CYP11A1, a key enzyme in steroidogenesis, was found to play significant roles in skin physiology and pathology by converting cholesterol to pregnenolone, which is crucial for the production of various steroids such as cortisol, estrogens, and androgens. The study highlighted that local production of corticosteroids in the skin, initiated by CYP11A1, was important for skin health and disease. Additionally, CYP11A1 could metabolize vitamin D and lumisterol, further emphasizing its multifaceted role in skin biology. The research was supported by several NIH and VA grants.
