TLDR BBS7 is crucial for maintaining periodontal health by supporting Shh signaling.
The study investigated the role of Bardet-Biedl syndrome 7 (BBS7) in maintaining periodontal ligament (PDL) homeostasis under occlusal hypofunction conditions. RNA sequencing of 34 human teeth revealed that BBS7 expression was downregulated in hypofunctional PDL, leading to atrophic changes such as reduced cell migration and angiogenesis. The study found that Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling activity was closely associated with BBS7 expression, suggesting that BBS7 played a crucial role in maintaining Shh signaling for PDL homeostasis. The findings highlighted the importance of mechanical stimuli in PDL maintenance and the potential impact of BBS7 on periodontal health.
