TLDR BBS7 is crucial for maintaining healthy gums by regulating important signaling pathways.
The study investigated the role of Bardet-Biedl syndrome 7 (BBS7) in maintaining periodontal ligament (PDL) homeostasis under occlusal hypofunction, using RNA sequencing on 34 human teeth. It was found that BBS7 expression was downregulated in hypofunctional PDL, leading to atrophic changes such as reduced cell migration and angiogenesis. The study highlighted the association between BBS7 and Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling, which was crucial for PDL homeostasis. The findings suggested that BBS7 played a vital role in regulating Shh signaling activity, which was essential for maintaining the structural integrity and function of the PDL.
