TLDR Women with PCOS are more likely to experience depressive symptoms.
This meta-analysis examined the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by analyzing data from 35 studies involving 5,857 women. The results showed that women with PCOS had a significantly higher prevalence of depressive symptoms compared to controls, with rates of 42.11% vs. 13.62%. Anxiety symptoms were also more prevalent in the PCOS group, with 48.25% compared to 31.40% in controls, although this difference was not statistically significant. The study underscores the importance of psychiatric evaluations and support for women with PCOS due to their increased risk of depressive symptoms, highlighting the psychological burden associated with PCOS and the need for targeted clinical interventions.
