TLDR Women with PCOS are more likely to experience depressive symptoms.
This meta-analysis examined the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by analyzing data from 35 studies involving 5,857 women. The results showed that women with PCOS have a significantly higher prevalence of depressive symptoms compared to controls, with rates ranging from 26.5% to 59.1% in PCOS patients versus 9.1% to 65.9% in controls, depending on the assessment tool used. Anxiety symptoms were also more prevalent in the PCOS group (48.25%) compared to the control group (31.40%), although this difference was not statistically significant. The study highlights the importance of psychiatric evaluations and support for women with PCOS due to the increased risk of depressive symptoms.
