TLDR Australia needs better dermatological guidelines for gender-diverse patients.
In Australia, there is a growing recognition of the unique dermatological needs of gender-diverse patients, particularly as referrals to gender health services increase. Despite this, there remains a significant knowledge gap and lack of tailored guidelines for this group. The article reviews the journey of Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) individuals undergoing psychological and pharmacologic treatment for gender dysphoria, focusing on skin, hair, and nail issues. It highlights that while puberty blockade (stage 1 treatments) has minimal dermatological impact, gender-affirming pharmacotherapy (stage 2 treatments) can cause dermatological issues such as acne, patterned hair loss, and dermatitis. Dermatologists also have a role in stage 3 treatments, which involve surgical or procedural interventions for gender affirmation.
