The Classic Dermatological Signs of Iron Deficiency: A Case-Series

    Bhokare Balkrishna
TLDR Iron deficiency can cause certain skin issues like eczematous hand and perioral lesions.
This study examined 26 patients with typical skin lesions to investigate the link between these dermatological signs and iron deficiency anemia. The majority of participants were young females, with only two males included. All subjects exhibited reduced hematological parameters indicative of iron deficiency anemia, confirmed through serum iron levels and other related tests. The study ruled out other potential causes such as zinc deficiency and contact dermatitis. The findings emphasize the importance of considering iron deficiency as a potential underlying cause for eczematous hand and perioral lesions when no other obvious cause is present. The study was limited to a single center.
