Dermatophyte Infection Encircling Vitiligo: A Unique Case Study

Nine years ago, a unique case of a 30-year-old woman with vitiligo, an autoimmune disease, was reported where a dermatophyte infection, specifically tinea corporis, was found encircling a vitiligo patch. This occurrence was rare, with only one other similar case found in literature. The woman was on combination therapy for vitiligo and responded satisfactorily to topical ketoconazole 2% cream for the dermatophyte infection. The exact mechanism for such an association between vitiligo and dermatophyte infection was not clear. Several hypotheses were proposed, including the role of Langerhans cells, keratinocyte damage, actinic radiation, and the immunosuppressive effects of the vitiligo treatment. However, the mechanisms remained cryptic and further understanding could help in understanding co-localization of various dermatological conditions.
