TLDR Following the DASH diet reduces mortality risk in hypertensive adults.
This study involving 13,230 hypertensive adults over a median follow-up of 8.3 years found that adherence to healthful dietary patterns, such as AHEI, DASH, HEI-2020, MED, and MEDI, was associated with reduced all-cause mortality, while a proinflammatory diet (high DII scores) increased mortality risk. Notably, only the DASH diet was independently linked to reduced cardiovascular mortality. The study emphasizes the importance of dietary quality, particularly the DASH diet, in managing hypertension and reducing mortality risk, suggesting that personalized dietary interventions could be crucial. Despite its observational nature, which limits causal inference, the study highlights the need for further research, including randomized controlled trials.
