TLDR Digoxin is linked to a higher risk of anemia in patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure.
This study analyzed data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System to examine the link between digoxin use and anemia in patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure. It included 8142 atrial fibrillation patients and 2588 heart failure patients treated with digoxin. The results showed a significant association between digoxin use and anemia, with reporting odds ratios of 1.38 for atrial fibrillation and 1.50 for heart failure patients. The study identified 821 genes associated with digoxin, many involved in iron transport, suggesting a potential mechanism for digoxin-induced anemia. The findings emphasized the need for caution when prescribing digoxin to patients with hematological conditions and suggested further research on its toxicological mechanisms.
