The study examined the effects of camelina, flaxseed, and canola oil supplementation on coat quality, skin barrier function, and inflammatory and oxidative markers in 30 healthy adult dogs over 16 weeks. No significant changes were observed in transepidermal water loss or inflammatory and oxidative marker concentrations across the different oil treatments. However, improvements in coat characteristics such as softness, shine, and color intensity were noted. Camelina oil was found to be comparable to flaxseed and canola oils in supporting skin and coat health. The study suggested camelina oil as a potential alternative plant-based oil for canine diets, though it lacked a negative control group to rule out placebo effects. Future research was recommended to explore the effects under conditions of immune or exercise challenges.
