TLDR An elemental database for Chinese herbal remedies was created to explore the role of inorganic species in medicine.
The thesis by Hongli Wu in 2013 focused on creating an elemental database for Chinese traditional herbal remedies, aiming to bridge the gap between bioinorganic chemistry and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The research highlighted the potential role of small molecule inorganic species in the therapeutic effects of TCM, an area that had been largely unexplored compared to organic compounds. The study proposed a strategy to integrate existing bioinorganic chemistry knowledge with TCM to identify bioactive metallo-species in herbal substances, which could contribute to drug development. The creation of this database was seen as a first step towards understanding the chemical compositions and bioavailable levels of elements in these remedies.
