TLDR Ellagic acid can help treat skin issues, but its effectiveness is limited by poor absorption, so new delivery methods are being explored.
Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenol with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and depigmenting properties beneficial for treating skin conditions like acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation, and melanoma. It protects against photoaging, oxidative stress, and strengthens collagen and elastin. However, EA's clinical efficacy is limited by its low solubility, instability, and poor skin permeability. This review discusses various EA formulations, including nano-delivery systems like vesicles and nanoparticles, and innovative preparations such as biscuits and nanosheets, aimed at overcoming these limitations to enhance its therapeutic effects for skin diseases.
