The Versatility of Azelaic Acid in Dermatology

Tamara Searle, Faisal R. Ali, Firas Al‐Niaimi
TLDR Azelaic acid is safe and effective for treating rosacea and other skin issues.
Azelaic acid was found to have versatile applications in dermatology due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The review of literature indicated the strongest evidence for its efficacy in treating rosacea, with moderate support for its off-label use in melasma and acne vulgaris. There was weaker evidence for its effectiveness in conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, keratosis pilaris, and male androgenic alopecia. Azelaic acid, whether used alone or in combination with other treatments, was considered a well-tolerated and safe option for various dermatological conditions.
