TLDR Oestrogen does not affect adrenal androgen levels in children and adolescents.
The study investigated the effect of oestrogen on adrenal androgen secretion in children and adolescents. It included 15 patients with premature adrenarche, 15 patients with gonadal dysgenesis undergoing oestrogen replacement therapy, and children with high endogenous oestrogen levels due to ovarian conditions. The findings indicated that premature adrenarche occurred without elevated oestrogen levels, and oestrogen replacement did not increase adrenal androgen levels in adolescents with gonadal dysgenesis. Additionally, high endogenous oestrogen levels in young children did not increase adrenal androgen secretion. The study concluded that circulating oestrogens were not necessary for adrenarche activation or maintenance and did not significantly affect adrenal androgen levels. Pubic hair growth observed during oestrogen therapy in adolescents with gonadal dysgenesis was likely due to oestrogen's effect on androgen action at the target tissue rather than increased adrenal androgen secretion.
