TLDR Prasiola japonica extract may help reduce hair loss and promote hair growth.
The study explores the effects of ethanol extract from the freshwater green alga Prasiola japonica (Pj-EE) on hair loss and growth in a testosterone-induced model using C57BL/6 mice and human dermal papilla cells. Pj-EE was found to promote hair regrowth, increase hair length, and enhance follicular density and activity by inhibiting 5α-reductase activity, reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT) production, and downregulating androgen receptor expression. Phytol, a significant component of Pj-EE, contributes to its 5α-reductase inhibitory activity. The study suggests that Pj-EE could be a promising natural treatment for androgenic alopecia by modulating androgen signaling pathways, although further validation in human scalp follicles is needed.
